Having a child is a completely life-changing experience. Who said it also had to be body changing? The changes to your body wrought by pregnancy, childbirth, and subsequent breastfeeding can put extraordinary stress on the skin and muscles of the abdomen, and on the breasts. Unfortunately, this can leave areas of sagging, stretched skin that are incredibly difficult to tighten back up, if not impossible, through diet and exercise.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is simply a term for combining various procedures into a single surgical session. Some of the same effects from pregnancy can occur if a person has gained and then lost a large amount of weight. Combining these procedures can be done for patients who have not had children.
A mommy makeover consists of a combination of surgical procedures that target the changes wrought by pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. While there is no “set” group of procedures, Dr. Olack’s mommy makeovers usually include a tummy tuck, breast lift with or without augmentation, and liposuction. To minimize recovery, all of the procedures are performed in a single surgical session.
Who Is a Good Candidate For a Mommy Makeover?
Pregnancy is unique to every person. Weight gain, loss of breast volume, stretched skin can all be addressed with this surgical procedure. It is always best to have a consultation and decide the right course of treatment for each individual patient.
What Procedures Are Involved in a Mommy Makeover?
Dr. Olack usually combines these procedures for his mommy makeovers:
Because the breasts gain size and weight during pregnancy, the skin and support tissue can stretch, making the breasts flatten and sag. A breast lift removes excess skin and repositions the breasts back higher on the chest.
Breastfeeding tends to decrease breast volume. Women who want to return volume, particularly to the upper part of the breasts, or who simply would like larger breasts, can opt to have breast implants inserted after the breast lift procedure. This is an easy time to add implants.
Stubborn pockets of fat can show up after pregnancy. They won’t usually respond to exercise, either. Liposuction removes these pockets on the inner and outer thighs, hips, and abdomen.
As described above, the stretching of the stomach skin and muscles during pregnancy is extreme. A tummy tuck trims excess sagging skin and repositions separated muscles to give you back a flat stomach.

Why Should I Combine Procedures?
The beauty of a Mommy Makeover is that you can combine multiple procedures into one. Some peaople, however, might ask why. Patients could opt to have each individual surgery one at a time, but this comes with costs. Three or four individual surgeries means three or four surgeries and recoveries. With a Mommy Makeover, you get to combine the surgeries and recoveries into one! Additionally, you are able to see maximum results sooner than if the procedures were spread out.

“Working with Dr. Olack was a great experience from start to finish, I’m very happy with the results of my mommy makeover and have gained back my self confidence. Dr. Olack and staff always made me feel comfortable and his bedside manner is outstanding. I would definitely recommend him!!”
Should I Have a Mommy Makeover If I Want More Children?
Dr. Olack insists that his patients really weigh their future chances of having additional children before going ahead with a mommy makeover. The reason is simple — if you become pregnant and deliver again, your body will gain weight in the same spots creating the same issues. You’ll wipe out all the gains made by your mommy makeover. If you have any doubt, you should wait to have a mommy makeover.
How Long Should I Wait After My Last Child for a Mommy Makeover?
Patients who are considering undergoing this procedure should be finished breast feeding for at least three months prior to surgery. Dr. Olack prefers for his potential patients to have lost most of their baby weight as well. On average, patients are recommended to wait at least six months before undergoing any body contouring procedures.
Risks of Mommy Makeover Surgery
The procedures involved in a Mommy Makeover are major surgeries, so they include the usual risks, such as:
- Possible Infection
- Reaction to Anesthesia
- Slow Healing
Of the four procedures, augmentation (if you opt for that) carries the most risk, as issues such as capsular contraction, asymmetrical final results, and implant rupture are possible. There is minimal risk with both tummy tucks and liposuction
Mommy Makeover Recovery Process
You will have had surgery on at least two areas of your body, along with liposuction on possible other spots. Of the procedures, the tummy tuck has the most involved recovery. This is because the length of the incision, along with the tightening of your abdominal muscles that have become separated.
Your first week after surgery is difficult. You’ll definitely be out of commission, so someone will have to take over with household duties. This applies particularly to caring for your children. Dr. Olack will have you in compression garments for one month for your tummy tuck and liposuction. This helps your body adapt to its new slimmer contours. You’ll wear a support bra for at least one month, maybe longer, to take pressure off your breast lift sutures. This will be a 24-hours-a-day requirement.
A tummy tuck can take a full six months to completely heal. You can’t lift anything more than 10 pounds for a period of six weeks or more. You’ll be able to begin a light level of activity after one to two weeks, but any strenuous activity or exercise will need to wait for 6-8 weeks.
