What to expect from benign skin lesion excision with a medical professional
When you have a skin lesion that your doctor has deemed benign, meaning it’s not cancerous, you may consider having it removed for cosmetic reasons. A medical specialist or provider is trained in performing this type of procedure, which is also called excision.
Prior to your surgery, our provider will give you specific instructions on how to prepare. This may include discontinuing certain medications or vitamins, such as aspirin or vitamin E supplements, which can increase bleeding. You’ll also be asked to shave the area around the lesion.
During the procedure, the area around the lesion will be numbed with local anesthesia. Your provider will make an incision around the lesion and remove it along with a margin of healthy tissue. The incision is closed with stitches, and a bandage will be applied.
You can expect some swelling and bruising after the procedure, which should resolve within a week or two. The stitches are removed within seven to 10 days by our team at a follow-up appointment scheduled in advance. Patients are strongly encouraged to follow the post-operative care instructions from their medical professional to ensure proper healing and to avoid the risks and complications that can arise, such as infection.
