Find out if you are a good fit for otoplasty surgery

A plastic surgeon doctor examines a male patient s ear for an otoplasty operation. The otoplasty procedure, also known as ear surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of the ears. Otoplasty can correct a wide variety of ear irregularities, including large or protruding ears, misshapen ears, and asymmetrical ears. Ear surgery can also be used to treat ear injuries or deformities caused by birth defects or trauma. The team at Olack Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery can assist in determining candidacy for this or other facial procedures available to Show Low, AZ patients.

What happens during the procedure?

Otoplasty is normally performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you will be able to go home the same day as your surgery. The exact details of your procedure will be determined by your surgeon based on your specific needs and goals.

In most cases, otoplasty is performed using local anesthesia, which numbs the area around your ears. You might also receive sedatoin to assist you in relaxing during the surgery. Once you are comfortable, your surgeon will make incisions in the natural folds of your ear or behind the ear. Through these incisions, our surgeon will access the cartilage and bone of your ear.

Your provider will then sculpt and reshape the cartilage and bone to create the desired shape and appearance of your ear. In some cases, your physician may also place permanent sutures to help maintain the new shape of your ear. Once satisfied with the results, they will close the incisions using dissolvable sutures or skin adhesives.

What to expect after the procedure?

After your surgery, you need to wear a headband or other type of dressing over your ears for a period of time to protect them as they heal. You can expect some swelling and bruising around your ears, which should dissipate within a week or two. Most patients return to their normal activities within a week, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks.
